The International Documentary Association has announced nominations in 18 categories for its 39th awards, led by Lea Glob’s Apolonia, Apolonia with four mentions. Milisuthando Bongela’s Milisuthando and Asmae El Moudir, The Mother of All Lies were next with three each.
Joining them as nominees for Best Feature Documentary are Against the Tide, ANHELL69, Bobi Wine: The People’s President, Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, In the Rearview, Q, and While We Watched.
The IDA also announced that the awards, which will be revealed on December 12, will go eschew an in-person even and go virtual on documentary.org and on the IDA’s YouTube, Facebook and Instagram channels.
“In the wake of devastating events unfolding in the world and the grief our staff, board, community, and humanity at large are experiencing, we have decided to forego an in-person party. We know that stories have the power to encourage compassion, understanding, and peace. We are committed to preserving space for stories to be shared. Our wish is to recognize and celebrate the nominees and winners together, as a global documentary community,” said Ken Ikeda, IDA Interim Executive Director.
This year the IDA Documentary Awards shortlists and nominees are selected by independent committees of 280 documentary makers, curators, critics, and industry experts from 40 countries. They received 669 total submissions in all categories from 48 countries. IDA members can view each of the nominated films and vote for films in the Best Feature Documentary and Best Short Documentary categories from November 21 to December 5, 2023.

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013.
He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
