The Art Directors Guild have announced their nomination in three categories: Period, Fantasy and Contemporary. Of these fifteen nominees we’ll likely find the five that will earn Academy Award nominations.
Some shocking snubs came today with Carol and Brooklyn missing out for Period and Room in Contemporary. Both films have been underperforming early in these guild nominations and that doesn’t bode well for their Oscar chances. Trumbo showed up, adding to its guild nomination total. Room was thought to have a good shot in Contemporary despite half the film taking place in a single room but in that category we have Sicario, a film that is already over-performing with the guilds (it just earned an ACE Eddie nom yesterday). Other high profile Contemporary films like Spotlight and The Big Short missed out as well.
Here are the nominees for the 20th Art Directors Guild awards:
Period
Bridge of Spies
Crimson Peak
The Danish Girl
The Revenant
Trumbo
Fantasy
Cinderella
Jurassic World
Mad Max: Fury Road
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Tomorrowland
Contemporary
Ex Machina
Joy
The Martian
Sicario
Spectre
