Austin Film Fest Sets ‘I Saw the Light,’ ‘Carol,’ ‘Youth’ for Oscar Glory

In its 22nd year, the Austin Film Festival’s first selection of films look to be all but bound for Oscar glory, including I Saw the Light, Carol and Youth, plus the debut of new television from Hulu from producer/director Jason Reitman (who is scheduled to attend). This first slate of 10 films precedes the full program which should arrive in mid-September.

The festival runs October 29-November 5.

Texas Premiere

In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, Carol follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. Starring Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Cory Michael Smith.

I Saw the Light

I Saw the Light tells the story of the iconic, tormented singer-songwriter who revolutionized country music with his raw charisma, haunting voice and original songs, most of which are considered American standards today and have been recorded many times over by pop, rock and country artists alike. Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy.
