‘Avengers,’ ‘Lost in Space,’ ‘Incredibles 2’ lead Visual Effects Society (VES) nominations, ‘Black Panther’ shut out

Avengers: Infinity War, Christopher Robin, Ready Player One, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Welcome to Marwen will compete for the Visual Effects Society’s top prize as the nominations for the group’s annual awards were announced today.

Avengers leads with 6, Ready Player One was next with 5 with Solo: A Star Wars Story and Welcome to Marwen next with three apiece.

All five of those films made the final 10 shortlist for the Oscar. Among the major shocks today were complete shut outs of Black Panther and Mary Poppins Returns. Black Panther, which just won the Critics’ Choice Visual Effects award last weekend and is nominated for the BAFTA, is seen by many as the frontrunner to win the Visual Effects Oscar (or at least was) and Mary Poppins Returns bringing back 2D animators who hadn’t worked in this realm in decades didn’t manage to score a single nod, even though the VES has multiple categories for film.

All other Oscar finalists – Ant-Man and the Wasp, First Man and Jurassic Park: Fallen World – earned at least one mention.

Bohemian Rhapsody continues to perform well across the guilds with a supporting visual effects nomination for the its epic Live Aid reenactment at the film’s climax. This marks the first guild that A Star Is Born has missed.

Incredibles 2 led the way in the animated section and Lost in Space, Altered Carbon and The Handmaid’s Tale found multiple nominations for television.

Winners will be revealed at the 17th annual VES Awards on Tuesday, February 5th. Here is the full list of nominees.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
