JOKER (Warner Bros)

The EE BAFTA, the British Academy Film Awards, announced their nominations today and Todd Phillips’ Joker led the field with 11 nominations including Best Film, Best Director for Todd Phillips and Best Leading Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Following closely behind were The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with 10 apiece and 1917 with 9. Jojo Rabbit received 6 nominations. Little Women, Marriage Story and The Two Popes received five apiece.

BAFTA was seeing double today as Scarlett Johansson, a previous BAFTA winner, earned two nominations; one in lead for Marriage Story and one in supporting for Jojo Rabbit and Margot Robbie got two nominations…in the same category – two supporting actress mentions for Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, effectively shutting out Hustler’s Jennifer Lopez.

The BAFTAs have a new category this year, Best Casting, their first new category in 21 years. Joker, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood The Personal History of David Copperfield and The Two Popes were inaugural nominees. Interestingly, this was Copperfield’s only nomination while 10-time nominee The Irishman was snubbed.

Sex Education‘s Asa Butterfield and Charlie’s Angels star Ella Balinska announced the nominees. The BAFTAs will be held on February 2 live at the Royal Albert Hall in London and hosted by Graham Norton. Here is the full list of nominations.
