BAFTA Awards: ‘Three Billboards’ is Best Film; Oldman, McDormand, Rockwell, Janney win acting prizes

Stop me if you think you’ve heard this won before…

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has won the BAFTA for Best Film of 2017. The film was the big winner of the night with five awards (of its nine nominations) that also included Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay. It becomes the first film in BAFTA history to take all four of those awards. It’s only the second film to win both Best Film and Best British Film (The King’s Speech did as well). Curiously, BAFTA and Oscar’s Best Picture have not aligned for the last three years in a row. Despite many categories looking very predictable going into the Oscars, Best Picture is still a bit of a nail-biter. Three Billboards has the Globe, SAG and BAFTA while The Shape of Water has DGA and PGA.

Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) adds a BAFTA to his Critics Choice, Golden Globe and Directors Guild wins, making his Oscar chances all but locked now. Only twice has a director won DGA and BAFTA and then lost the Oscar: Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Ben Affleck (Argo).

Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) continued his march towards Oscar with another Best Actor win. With the film’s Makeup and Hair win it’s very likely that this will mirror The Iron Lady at the Oscars, with both Oldman and Best Actress winner Meryl Streep playing British Prime Ministers. Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and stop me if you’ve heard this one before, won Best Actress.

Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and Allison Janney (I, Tonya) took home the supporting prizes tonight, continuing an astonishing streak that, like Oldman and McDormand, has included the Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. No acting winner, male or female, has ever taken all of these precursors and then lost the Oscar.

Call Me By Your Name won Adapted Screenplay in what has been a season of consistent wins for the film in this category. It won the WGA and USC Scripter last month.

The Handmaiden won Film Not in the English Language. This is the 1st win (and the 1st nomination) in this category for South Korea. I Am Not Your Negro won Documentary; it was Oscar-nominated last year (but lost to O.J.: Made in America). Four of the last seven years, the winner here was either not nominated or not eligible for the Oscars in the same calendar year. Coco‘s Animated Feature win continues its streak and path to the Oscars. Only twice has the winner here not won the Oscar (The LEGO Movie, Kubo and the Two Strings).

Baby Driver‘s triumph over Dunkirk in Editing is a bit of a boost for its Oscar chances; 8 of 10 BAFTA winners went on to receive the Oscar in that category. Dunkirk bounced back by besting Baby Driver in the Sound category. BAFTA combines sound editing and sound mixing (unlike the Oscars) and bodes well for its Oscar chances. Blade Runner 2049, already a near-lock for the Oscar won the BAFTA for Visual Effects. Only twice has BAFTA and Oscar not aligned (Hugo in 2011 and Ex-Machina in 2015). The film also scored the Cinematography win for Roger Deakins. Deakins just won the ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) award last night. Only one time has a person won both ASC and BAFTA and then lost the Oscar and that was 2006’s Children of Men to Pan’s Labyrinth. This could be Deakins’s best shot at the Oscar after an incredible 14 nominations.

Daniel Kaluuya bested his Best Actor Oscar (and BAFTA) competition Timothée Chalamet for the Rising Star Award, an award that’s voted on by the public.

The ceremony was once again held at the Royal Albert Hall but will Joanna Lumley taking over the hosting duties from Stephen Fry.
