BAFTA longlists: ‘Mank,’ ‘Promising Young Woman, ‘Trial of the Chicago 7’ lead

BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, returned to its longlists ahead of nominations (but for the first time ever in all categories) and announced on Thursday morning the films that will compete for a BAFTA nomination.

Mank, Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 led the way with News of the World, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Mauritanian among other top contenders. Some surprising snubs from the longlists include: Minari in Best Film, Spike Lee in Best Director, Jared Leto in Supporting Actor (he was nominated by the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild this week), Bill Murray in Supporting Actor, Andra Day in Best Actress and Sidney Flanigan in Best Actress.

BAFTA has made dramatic efforts towards race and gender equality and parity this year including the directing category. In Round One of voting to determine the longlist, the directing chapter voted and the top eight female- and top eight male-directed films were automatically longlisted. The remaining two female and two male directors were voted for by an executive jury.

The next round of voting will open February 19 and close on March 1. Nominations will be announced March 9. Round Three of winner voting goes from March 25 to April 7 and the BAFTAs will be awarded on April 11.

Best Film

15 films go through to the Round Two of voting, and five will be nominated. This is the only category voted for by all film voting members in all voting rounds. 244 films were submitted for consideration.

Outstanding British Film

20 films will go through to Round Two of voting. The top five films from the opt-in chapter vote in Round One automatically receive a nomination. The next ranking 15 films will be considered by a jury, who will vote for five nominations. 10 films will be nominated in this category. In Round Three, the general voting membership will select the winner in this category. 74 films were submitted for consideration, all of which passed the BFI Diversity Standards.
