BAFTA Nomination Predictions

The BAFTA nominations are right around the corner (tomorrow, 7:30am UK time), hot off the heels of the Golden Globes last night and I have my thoughts and predictions for what’s getting in and what might get snubbed. With so many potential Oscar contenders like Get Out and Lady Bird being so very “American” we might see lower nomination totals for them and possibly higher totals for more European fare like Call Me By Your Name and distinctly UK productions like Dunkirk, Darkest Hour and Victoria and Abdul to do well and for the US/UK hybrid Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri to make a killing here.

Getting in under the eligibility deadline at BAFTA has often run contenders right off the list, even major Oscar winners. Dallas Buyers Club didn’t screen for UK audiences in time to nominate it or eventual Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. Million Dollar Baby, too. For Oscar winners Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball) and Charlize Theron (Monster), they were nominated the next year (both lost). This year shouldn’t have any leftover winners from last year looking for nominations but there is a chance that nominee Isabelle Huppert (Elle) could crash Best Actress as her film screened just outside of last season’s deadline.

Here are my predictions for this year’s BAFTA nominations. The nominations will be announced live on BAFTA’s Twitter and Facebook. at 7:30am GMT / 2:30am EST / 11:30pm PST.
