BAFTA Preview and Predictions: Will Birdman Continue Its Winning Streak?

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards are this Sunday and it finds itself with Oscar bloggers on the edge of their seats over the possibility of Birdman continuing its industry winning streak. After its PGA and SAG wins many of us have turned the corner on the possibility of Birdman taking the big prize at the Oscars, unless it’s thwarted by its main competitor. Can Boyhood finally make good on its early frontrunner status and win here? What about the nomination leader, The Grand Budapest Hotel? Costume Design and Production Design seem like givens here (as they do at the Oscars) but can it make a bigger dent?

Right now I’m leaning to Boyhood returning to its place as frontrunner and for Birdman to take 2nd place here. It seems most of the Gold Rush Gang agrees with the exception of Peter Cioth and Alexander Knecht. They are both going with Birdman for Best Film but they split on Director; Peter is going with Iñárritu while Alexander thinks Linklater will still prevail despite his film losing.

The acting categories seem set for a SAG and Golden Globe redux with Redmayne, Moore, Simmons and Arquette repeating their victories.

Let’s take a quick look at the BAFTA/Oscar history from 2000-2013. Granted, lots of things changed with both groups in that period. BAFTA stopped producing its longlists from which nominations would come from, the Oscars expanded Best Picture in 2009 and 2010 to 10 and then to a group of 5-10 possible nominees.

So, we can see that for the last six years BAFTA and Oscar have been in total agreement. But before that it was a free-for-all with BAFTA being a little less concerned about being Oscar predictable and really just doing what it wanted to. Come back tomorrow and see if my predictions stand or if Peter and Alexander are on the right track towards Gold Rush domination. We’ll be updating the BAFTA winners here on the Awardswatch mainpage as they’re revealed and announcing on Twitter (but spoiler-free).

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
