The Costume Designers Guild (CDG) have announced their nominations for the 23rd CDG Awards in film and television, recognizing the work in films like Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, Emma. and Mulan as well as The Crown, Euphoria and The Mandalorian.

The Costume Designers Guild separates their awards into three categories: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Contemporary and Period, although there is some question about what or how a film qualifies as one or the other. For example, Mulan is in Sci-Fi/Fantasy while Birds of Prey is nominated in Contemporary.

At 89, Ann Roth could become the oldest costume design nominee in Oscar history after receiving a Costume Designers Guild Award nomination for her work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom today. Roth has earned four Oscar nominations and won for 1996’s The English Patient. This is her sixth CDG nomination.

One shocking miss was News of the World from costume designer Mark Bridges. Bridges is a two-time Oscar winner and 7-time CDG nominee. News of the World has been a guild beast so far this season but missed out her in favor of Emma., Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank and One Night in Miami. Bridges was also snubbed for Joker here last year and then went on to earn an Oscar nomination without any precursors.

“I would like to congratulate all of the nominees of the 23rd Costume Designers Guild Awards. We’ve had to come together as a community to support one another during these unprecedented times. We believe that through our work we have been supporting our audiences as well,” said Salvador Perez, President of the Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892. “We look forward to honoring costume designers’ achievements and their creativity which has transported and inspired us.”

“With the need to shift our show to a virtual and limited in-person production, we embraced the opportunity to create an entirely new format that will amplify the recognition of these brilliant costume designers,” said JL Pomeroy, Executive Producer of CDGA and Founder of JumpLine. “For the first time, fans can tune-in on Twitter to help celebrate the innovative genius of the costume designers who bring characters to life in their favorite films and series.”

For the first time in CDGA history, the annual awards show will be live-streamed worldwide exclusively on their Twitter – @CostumeAwards – at 5:30pm PT / 8:30pm ET on April 13. This year’s host, presenters and honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.
