The Romanian meta-drama I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians is the Grand Prize winner of the 53rd Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The film’s title refers to the Council of Ministers, who, in the summer of 1941, started an ethnic cleansing on the Eastern Front. The film was a huge critical success with Variety calling it “blistering” and “acutely topical.”

The Brazilian/Argentinian film Sueño Florianópolis, from Ana Katz, won two awards – the Special Jury Prize and the Best Actress award for Mercedes Morán. The film details a family trip to Florianópolis with tales of first love, past lovers, fateful encounters, and fleeting joys interwoven in.

High-profile prizes went to actor Robert Pattinson, actor/director Tim Robbins and director Barry Levinson. Pattinson won the festival’s President’s Award and can currently be seen in Damsel with Mia Wasikowska and later this year in Claire Denis’ High Life. Robbins and Levinson were lauded for their Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.

Earlier this week it was announced that Karlovy Vary world premiere Crystal Swan would be Belarus’s official submission for the Foreign Language Film Oscar race, the first country to announce.
