‘Big Little Lies’ season 2 trailer: Mama drama and trauma in Monterey

Meryl Streep is ready to cause waves on the peninsula in season two of Big Little Lies

After a huge wave of social media clamoring, HBO’s Big Little Lies – initially a single limited series event – is back for a second season and bringing with it not just Emmy winners Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon plus Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley but none other than Meryl Streep.

The action picks up not long after the death of Perry (season 1’s Alexander Skarsgård) at the hands of Celeste (Kidman), Madeline (Witherspoon), Jane (Woodley), Renata (Dern) and Bonnie (Kravitz) and keeping their dark secret from coming out. Enter Perry’s mother Mary Louise (Streep’s actual name, funnily enough) who wants answers and wants them now.

The initial ‘first’ season earned 16 Emmy nominations and won eight, including three of the four acting prizes. HBO decided to air it outside of the 2018/2019 Emmy season to give the final season of Game of Thrones the widest berth possible.

Official synopsis:

The Golden Globe and Emmy-winning series is a subversive, darkly comedic drama, which will continue to explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Woodley’s character Jane Chapman will be processing Perry’s sudden death in the storyline, while trying to build a new life for herself and her son, Ziggy. Dern, who received both an Emmy and Golden Globe for her performance, will be reprising her role as Renata Klein, a woman who will be faced with new challenges in her marriage. Bonnie Carlson, Zoë Kravitz’s character, will confront her past while struggling to come to terms with Perry’s death.

The second season of Big Little Lies returns June 9th.
