The Black Film Critics Circle (BFCC) has chosen Dolemite Is My Name as the Best Film of 2019, also giving the Rudy Ray Moore biopic Best Actor for Eddie Murphy (playing the titular role) and Supporting Actress to Da’Vine Joy Randolph. The film also earned the group’s Ensemble award.
Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) and Kasi Lemmons (Harriet) tied for Best Director and the other acting prizes went to Lupita Nyong’o (Us) for Best Actress and Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) for Supporting Actor.
Ruth E. Carter was giving the Pioneer Award. She won an Oscar last season for Black Panther‘s costumes and did Dolemite‘s this year. Kelvin Harrison, Jr. was named the year’s Rising Star for his breakthrough work in Luce and Waves.
