Moonlight continued its critics’ nomination domination with a field-best 13 nominations from the Black Reel Awards. That included three nominations in supporting actor (for Mahershala Ali, Andre Holland, and Ashton Sanders) plus another three in a single category – Breakthrough Performance, Male – where Alex Hibbert, Trevante Rhodes, and Sanders were nodded. Fences followed closely with 10 nominations, including three for Denzel Washington as actor, director, and co-producer of the film. Don Cheadle was also a triple-nominee for Miles Ahead as actor, director, and writer.
Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation, which weathered an unbeatable controversy ahead of its release this fall, didn’t end up in Motion Picture but nearly everywhere else below that including Directing, Writing and Acting nominations for Parker.
Replacing TBOAN in Motion Picture was Manchester by the Sea. While you might scratch your head and wonder why a film that is as white as MbtS is, it’s important to know that the film’s producer, Kimberly Steward, is African-American. The daughter of a billionaire tech mogul, Steward is using her money and her might to fund independent film (much like Annapurna’s Megan Ellison does). If Manchester by the Sea is nominated for Oscar’s Best Picture (and there’s no reason to think it won’t be) Steward will become just the second black woman (after Oprah Winfrey, no less) to be nominated in Oscar’s top category.
