Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Promising Young Woman topped the film winners at the 73rd Writers Guild of America awards, which were held today in a joint virtual ceremony, from Los Angeles and New York, and hosted by Kal Penn.
In the film categories, the most closely looked at race was Original Screenplay, which saw a matchup between Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, both written by their film’s directors. With Fennell prevailing here, she is now the frontrunner for the Oscar, where we haven’t had a female winner since Diablo Cody for 2007’s Juno. This not only dampens Sorkin’s chances in this category but also in Best Picture. Four of the five nominees here landed Oscar nominations in the same category with the WGA-ineligible Minari subbed in with Palm Springs here along with Judas and the Black Messiah and Sound of Metal.
The WGA went for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm in Adapted Screenplay in a very open category that was missing the Oscar frontrunner (Nomadland, due to guild eligibility, also The Father), only going 3/5 here with Oscar. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Only One Night in Miami and The White Tiger made the leap to Oscar, with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and News of the World out there and in here.
For television, Netflix dominated the TV awards with wins for The Crown in Drama Series, Ozark in Episodic Drama for “Fire Pink” and Adapted Long for The Queen’s Gambit.
“I’ve only been a WGA member for a few years and I’m already regretting it,” joked Brett Goldstein on his New Series win as part of the writing team of Ted Lasso. The freshman show from Apple TV+ also won Comedy Series and enters the next Emmy race as the frontrunner.
Desus & Mero surprised with a win in the Talk Show category, breaking a four-year streak that was held by Last Week tonight with John Oliver. At Home with Amy Sedaris was the Comedy Sketch winner and The Great took home the Episodic Comedy prize.
