The Boston Society of Film Critics (BSFC) gave Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk its first major Best Film critics’ win today. The film also earned Regina King another Best Supporting Actress win as well as Best Original Score for Nicholas Britell.
The group went in for Lynne Ramsay as Best Director for You Were Never Really Here. She also won with the city’s online group. This is Ramsay’s third critics’ win, placing her behind ROMA‘s Alfonso Cuarón on the critics’ leaderboard for the season so far.
Best Actor went way outside with a win for John C. Reilly in Stan & Ollie. Critics’ fave Ethan Hawke (First Reformed) had to settle for runner-up status.
They went crazy for Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters, giving the film two wins: Ensemble and Foreign Language Film as well as a runner-up mention for Sakura Ando.
