The 2018 GLAAD Media Awards, which cover film, television, journalism and digital media, has revealed its nominations.
The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community and the issues that affect their lives.
Call Me By Your Name and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women were among the Outstanding Film – Wide Release nominees and in the television section, along with Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series nominees for shows that contain regular LGBTQ characters, GLAAD also recognizes shows without a recurring LGBTQ character but had an LGBTQ-inclusive episode such as Room 104 and Legion. They also nominated the Emmy-winning “Thanksgiving” episode from Master of None but Lena Waithe’s Denise is a regular/recurring character so that’s a bit of an odd choice/distinction.
In journalism, Teen Vogue, NBC Nightly News and The Washington Post were nominated for their stories on LGBTQ issues and GLAAD also focuses a portion of their journalism categories on Spanish-language coverage.
In Music, nominees include Sam Smith, Halsey and St. Vincent and there are two Special Recognition awards for JAY-Z’s “Smile,” from his album 4:44 about his mother’s coming out and In a Heartbeat, the animated short film in contention for an Oscar nomination this coming Tuesday.
The awards will be given out in dual ceremonies in Los Angeles on April 12 at The Beverly Hilton and on May 5 in New York City at the New York Hilton Midtown.
