‘Call Me By Your Name’ Sets Record at 15th International Cinephile Society (ICS) Nominations

The International Cinephile Society (ICS), of which I am a voting member, has announced the nominations for its 15th season and Luca Guadagnino’s sumptuous Italian summer romance Call Me By Your Name topped the list with record-setting 11 nominations including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor x 2 and Supporting Actress.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread was next with 8 nominations. James Gray’s The Lost City of Z earned 6 nominations, including Best Picture and Director for Gray as did Bertrand Bonello’s Nocturama. A handful of overlooked films this awards season came in with four apiece including Good Time, Personal Shopper and A Quiet Passion. Speaking of Good Time and Personal Shopper, Twilight co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart continue to successfully stretch their art-house talents and both earned nominations today.

As is often the case with the ICS, their choices can often divert from the more predictable best of lists. That includes the total lack of mentions from Oscar favorites like The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Even Get Out only snagged an Original Screenplay nomination here. Only Lady Bird managed to escape, earning six nominations including Best Picture and Director. But the International Cinephile Society has never been about aligning itself with other awards bodies and the membership is so uniquely, well, international, that the results of their year-end choices very often reflect that. Films like Nocturama, On the Beach at Night Alone and The Death of Louis XIV found major support within the group.

In keeping with ICS tradition, the ‘Films Not Yet Released’ list features 20 underseen films that our members were lucky enough to catch at festivals on five continents, and for which they voted passionately, but which failed to receive theatrical distribution in the USA in 2017.

About the ICS

Formed in 2003, the International Cinephile Society is an online group comprised of approximately 100 accredited journalists, film scholars, historians and other industry professionals who cover film festivals and events on five continents. Led by ICS president Cédric Succivalli, each year the ICS honors the finest in American and international cinema.

In addition to award winners for the previous year announced each February, the ICS revealed a Top 100 Films of the 1990s in the first half of 2010. ICS has been accredited at the Festival de Cannes in 2010-2017, and also covers a number of other film festivals including Berlin, Toronto, New York, Vancouver, Rome, Venice, San Sebastian, San Francisco, AFI, Seattle, Rotterdam and TCM.
