Cannes 2020: ‘In the Mood for Love’ to screen for 20th anniversary

This year, the 73rd Cannes Film Festival will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar-wai in the Cannes Classics section of the festival before its re-release on the big screen in the summer of 2020 in France and internationally.

Originally presented in the Official Selection and in Competition in 2000, In the Mood for Love, by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai, about a woman (Maggie Cheung) and a man (Tony Leung) who form a strong bond after both suspect extramarital activities of their spouses, won Leung the festival’s Best Actor Prize and was awarded the Grand Prize of the Superior Technical Commission for cinematographers Christopher Doyle and Lee Ping-bing, and for the film’s editor, costume and production designer William Chang Suk-ping.

The 4k restoration of the film made from the original negative was lead by Criterion and L’Immagine Ritrovata under the supervision of Wong Kar-wai.

International distribution for the re-release include: Janus Films (U.S., U.K., Australia/New-Zealand), The Jokers Films (French-speaking territories), Koch Films (German-speaking territories), Avalon DA (Spain), Leopando Filmes (Portugal), Inoekino (CIS), Asmik Ace (Japan), Catchplay (Taiwan) and NK Contents (South Korea).
