Cannes 2021: Joanna Hogg’s ‘The Souvenir Part II’ among Directors’ Fortnight lineup

The highly anticipated sequel to Joanna Hogg’s 2019 film The Souvenir is set to highlight the 53rd Directors’ Fortnight lineup of the Cannes Film Festival, held July 7-17. The sequel stars Tilda Swinton (who also appears in Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s in competition title Memoria), Richard Ayoade, Charlie Heaton, Joe Alwyn and Harris Dickinson and executive produced by Martin Scorsese. The Souvenir will also appear in a special screening and its sequel marks Hogg’s first appearance at Cannes.

The section will open with Emmanuel Carrère’s drama Between Two Worlds starring Juliette Binoche and based on the bestseller “Le Quai de Ouistreham.” The lineup will present eight debut features, all eligible for the festival’s Camera d’Or, including Hit the Road, by Jafar Panahi’s son, Panah Panahi, and Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s Murina, a coming-of-age story set along the Adriatic Sea which is executive produced by Martin Scorsese. Kusijanovic’s is and award winner for her short Into the Blue, which won prizes at the Berlin and Sarajevo festivals, and also earned a Student Academy Award nomination.

Cannes 2021: Critics’ Week brings a French heavy lineup

The 53rd edition will also pay tribute to American documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman, director and producer of Ex Libris: The New York Public Library, Boxing Gym and Hospital. Wiseman will be awarded the Carrosse d’Or on July 7, during the Directors’ Fortnight opening ceremony. Past recipients have included John Carpenter and Martin Scorsese.

2021 Cannes Film Festival Lineup: Big auteurs, expanded lineups and a record number of women filmmakers

Unlike the main competition films, Directors’ Fortnight is a non-competitive section that is open to the public through a system of season tickets and individual screening tickets. This year, due to the pandemic, all Fortnight screenings will require online booking, as with the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festivals.
