Cardi B leads MTV Video Music Awards Nominations; The Carters, Childish Gambino, Drake score

Cardi B led the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards nominations today with 10, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. She received nominations a solo artist, collaborator and featured artist across multiple songs and categories.

Right behind were The Carters, aka Jay-Z and Beyoncé, with eight nominations, and Childish Gambino and Drake each earned seven.  Bruno Mars had six mentions while Ariana Grande and Camilla Cabello grabbed five for “No Tears Left To Cry” and “Havana,” respectively.

Despite a generally excellent set of nominees there were some savage snubs including Janelle Monáe in any of the top categories (she earned three nominations in the Video with a Message, Art Direction and Editing). Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars,” from the year’s highest grossing film that just won the MTV Movie Award for Best Movie, Black Panther, wound up with a Visual Effects nod and that’s it.

The Artist of the Year category found itself with 50/50 parity between male and female artists. Avicii earned a posthumous nomination in Visual Effects for “Lonely Together” ft. Rita Ora. The famed DJ committed suicide earlier this year.

The 2018 MTV VMAs will be broadcast on live MTV on Monday, August 20th at 9 PM ET/PT.
