Chadwick Boseman, ‘ black-ish,’ ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ are top winners for night five of the NAACP Image Awards

Chadwick Boseman was a posthumous winner at the fifth night of the non-televised 52nd NAACP Image Awards, winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for Netflix’s Da 5 Bloods as well as Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture as a part of Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman died on August 18, 2020, of cancer at the age of 43.

Netflix’s Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey won two awards, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Phylicia Rashad (who, coincidentally, was Boseman’s acting teacher at Howard University) and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture for newcomer Madelen Mills.

Netflix’s Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker was a triple winner in the limited series section of television with Outstanding Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special and stars Octavia Spencer and Blair Underwood winning outstanding actress and actor awards.

Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost also picked up a trio of awards: Outstanding Drama Series, Clifford “Method Man” Smith for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for and Mary J. Blige for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. It was the first NAACP Image Award win for both.

ABC’s black-ish continued its NAACP dominance with repeat television wins for Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin and Deon Cole while HBO’s Insecure took Outstanding Comedy Series.

Accepting of behalf of Insecure, show creator and star Issa Rae said, “If you’re watching this and ‘Insecure’ just won best comedy series and I am hyped.” She continued by giving thanks to her fellow EPs Prentice Penny and Melina Matosoukas, DP Ava Berkovsky, the show’s writers, cast and crew for their talent and dedication.

Rae continued with a message to the show’s fans saying, “I just want to thank you guys so much for including us in your homes this trying, terrible past year. It has been hard, but you did not stop arguing about these characters, judging them, embracing them, loving them, and it’s truly an honor to grace your TV screens. … I cannot wait to bring you guys season five hopefully this year.”

Anthony Anderson will host the televised 52nd NAACP Image Awards, which air live on BET on Saturday, March 27 at 5pm PT/8pm ET. The ceremony will be simulcast across ViacomCBS Networks including CBS, BET Her, VH1, MTV, MTV2, and LOGO.
