The Chicago Film Critics Association has revealed its nominations for the best in film for 2020 and Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland leads the way with 7. Not far behind were Da 5 Bloods and First Cow with six apiece, including Best Picture. Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things also earned six nominations but fell short of best picture and best director.
Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman and Steve McQueen’s Lovers Rock rounded out the Best Picture top 5. Fennell was also nominated for her direction, original screenplay and as most promising new filmmaker. McQueen was also nominated for director and Letitia Wright was nominated in supporting actress for Mangrove, thus beginning what will be a contentious season about whether or not his Small Axe films are feature films or television movies.
Here is the full list of nominations. Winners will be announced December 21.
