Costume Designers Guild (CDG) goes for ‘Jojo Rabbit,’ ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ ‘The Masked Singer’
Chris Evans’ sweater in Knives Out, Taika Waititi’s Nazi uniforms in Jojo Rabbit and Angelina Jolie’s horns in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil were the winners of last night’s Costume Designers Guild Awards in the Contemporary, Period, and Sci-Fi / Fantasy categories for motion pictures.
In television, Schitt’s Creek, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Game of Thrones took the same respective categories.
For Jojo Rabbit it was a bit of an upset over Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which was the favorite. The two were the only films nominated for CDG awards that are also nominated for the Costume Design Oscar. Interestingly enough, Jojo also bested Once at the ACE Eddie for film editing (only Jojo is Oscar-nominated there). In the last decade, the CDG winner has gone on to win the Oscar five times but also came with a win from BAFTA and/or Critics Choice. Dolemite Is My Name won Critics Choice but was not Oscar-nominated. Both Jojo and Once are nominated for the BAFTA.
Mindy Kaling hosted the event, which featured tributes and special awards to Charlize Theron, Mary Ellen Fields, Michael Kaplan and Adam McKay.
The Costume Designers Guild (CDG) is Local 892 of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.). The Guild represents Costume Designers, Assistant Costume Designers and Costume Illustrators working at the highest levels of skill and expertise in motion pictures, television and commercials. The CDG promotes and protects the economic status of its members while improving working conditions and raising standards for our craft.
