Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had two chances to earn their third letter in the elusive EGOT, and it’s a good thing, too. The pair won Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score) for Watchmen (“It’s Summer And We’re Running Out Of Ice”). They now have the Emmy, Grammy and Oscar of EGOT. Can someone say Johnny Cash Broadway musical?
Schitt’s Creek and Succession took home two very important awards on their way to Comedy and Drama Series wins this coming Sunday. The Casting award is often the best predictor for comedy and the two frontrunners clinched it tonight. The last five Comedy Series winners in a row won Casting first.
Brie Larson also earned another letter tonight, adding an Emmy to her Oscar. She won Outstanding Original Interactive Program for The Messy Truth VR Experience, which allows a viewer to be in the mindset of a young Black boy as his father is being pulled over and harassed by the police. Larson was a producer on the project.
Maya Rudolph won her first Emmy ever, for Outstanding Character Voice-Over for her work as Connie the Hormone Monster on Netflix’s Big Mouth. Rudolph is the first person of color to win this award since it became a competitive award for voice-over in 2009. Big Mouth also won the Emmy for Outstanding Derivative Interactive Program.
Quibi won its first ever Emmys, in their first year being nominated, taking both of the Short Form acting categories: Laurence Fishburne for Actor and Jasmine Cephas Jones for Actress, both for #FreeRayshawn. Cephas Jones joins her father Ron as an Emmy winner (he’s nominated again this year) and she adds this to her Grammy for Hamilton. HBO’s Euphoria took home the win for Music & Lyrics with the song “All For Us.”
