Critics’ Choice Awards, or how 12YAS did well in the wrong place

In the wake of the Oscar nomination, the Broadcast Film Critics Association held their annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards last night. One can question their usefulness in predicting the Oscars now that they were held after the nominations were revealed, especially since 12 Years A Slave, which underperformed on nomination morning, did comparatively well here, winning Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. We can not rule out it may still win those three on March 2nd, but it will be an uphill battle in the first two, in booth of which American Hustle (and Jennifer Lawrence) has to be the favorite now. It is probably telling that leading man Chiwetel Ejiofor didn’t manage to win even here, and Matthew McConaughey’s road to Oscar looks clearer every day.
Elsewhere, American Hustle faltered a bit, only winning Ensemble and Hair & Makeup (for which it wasn’t nominated for the Oscars), plus some of the lesser awards that seem to be designed to only get more starts to attend their gala. Gravity won heavy in the tech categories, as well as for director Alfonso Cuarón, the now hot favorite to win his category. And The Great Gatsby, all but forgotten, had a strong day, winning two awards here.

Come discuss the usefulness of these awards here on our forums.
