Critics’ Choice TV Nominations Big on New Shows: Westworld, Atlanta, Fleabag, The Crown Score Noms

The 22nd Critics’ Choice Awards announced their television nominations today and new shows like Westworld, Atlanta, Fleabag and The Crown found themselves nominated in top categories alongside shows like Veep, Game of Thrones and House of Cards. Top nomination-getters included The People v. O.J. Simpson with six, Game of Thrones and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt both earned five.

Last month the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) was hit with a scandal when they announced that Entertainment Weekly and People Magazine would receive exclusive first rights to the nominations. That resulted in a handful of resignations (about 15% of the group) from major television critics like Michael Ausiello from TVLine, Matt Roush from TV Guide,Yahoo TV’s Ken Tucker and Kristen Baldwin and many more. This comes just a year after an even bigger eye-rolling controversy when the BTJA’s sister org the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) announced their film nominations last year before screening Star Wars: The Force Awakens and then deciding to include it in their top 10 after the fact. Well, top 11.

The Critics’ Choice Awards, which again will include both television and film (a la the Golden Globes) will once again be hosted by TJ Miller (last year’s winner in Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and a nominee again this year) and air on A&E live on December 11th at 8pm ET/5 pm PT. This is a jump of nearly a month from last year to position themselves as one of the first awards shows of the season.
