Dan Gilroy’s untitled Netflix thriller (although the title Velvet Buzzsaw has been bandied about online) reteaming him with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo has amped up its star wattage adding Oscar nominees Toni Collette and John Malkovich as well as Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs, Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge, Zawe Ashton and Stranger Things breakout Natalia Byer.
Gilroy earned an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for his previous effort with Gyllenhaal and Russo, 2014’s Nightcrawler and his last film, Roman J. Israel, Esq. got Denzel Washington his 8th Academy Award nomination.
This new film centers on the dark underworld of big money and art collectors in Los Angeles and is currently filming for a 2018 release.
Collette will first be seen this year in A24’s horror film Hereditary in June. John Malkovich has packed slate for 2018 that also includes another Netflix film, Birdbox and STX Entertainment’s Mile 22. Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) can be seen on ABC’s black-ish. Tom Sturridge will have Journey’s End and Mary Shelley for 2018. Ashton stands the shot as the biggest breakout, having previously been in Nocturnal Animals (with Gyllenhaal) and will next be seen in Oscar winner Neil Jordan’s The Widow with Oscar nominee Isabelle Huppert. Byer, who plays Nancy on Stranger Things is set to return to the hit Netflix series for its third season.
