The Casting Society of America (CSA) nominations have been announced in multiple film categories for its 32nd Artois Awards and there are a few…interesting category placements, to say the least.
Hell or High Water, which just earned an ACE Eddie nomination in Drama this morning is in Comedy (??) here while Captain Fantastic, which was entered as a Comedy at ACE (but not nominated) is a Drama here. The blurred lines of comedy and drama seem to be getting blurrier and the need for two categories might be less and less necessary.
The Jungle Book, which was over 70% computer animated, wound up in the Animated category alongside Finding Dory, Moana, The Little Prince, and Zootopia.
Even in a group with five categories of film nominees, there were major movies snubbed again (just as they were at ACE): Sully and Florence Foster Jenkins found no love at CAS today. Only one day into guild awards nomination season (post-SAG) and the path is getting clear for some and very difficult for others.
In dual winner ceremonies to be held on January 19th, Joel McHale will emcee the Los Angeles event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and Michael Urie will host the New York event at Stage 48 in Hell’s Kitchen. As previously announced, Annette Bening will be honored with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement, and casting director Nina Gold will receive the Hoyt Bowers Award, which will be presented by J.J. Abrams at the L.A. ceremony. The newly named Marion Dougherty New York Apple Award will go toThe Public Theater at the N.Y. ceremony.
