Dorian Award nominations: ‘Parasite,’ ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire,’ ‘Pain and Glory’ top GALECA list

GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (of which I am a member), has announced their nominations for the 2020 Dorian Awards representing the best in film and LGBTQ representation on film and television for 2019.

International films dominated the lists with Pain and Glory (5), Parasite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire earning six apiece. Lulu Wang’s The Farewell is nominated in the Foreign Language Film of the Year category and also earned nominations for Awkwafina in Best Actress and Zhao Shuzhen in Supporting Actress.

LGBTQ Film of the Year nominees included Booksmart, End of the Century and Rocketman and the Unsung Film of the Year category saw nominations for The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Waves.

Over in television, love was showered for Schitt’s Creek, Pose and The Other Two as well as the group’s cheeky Campy TV Show of the Year category which housed not one but two Ryan Murphy shows – American Horror Story: 1984 and The Politician.

“We want the work and power of LGBTQ entertainment journalists to be as recognized and visible as possible, and having our Dorians gradually mirror the Emmys’ calendar and the traditional TV season is a part of that effort,” said John Griffiths, GALECA’s founder and Executive Director, in a statement.  

The film nominees eligibility window is the full 2019 calendar year; the television nominees have an eligibility window of November 1, 2018 – November 1, 2019.

Previously announced, Olivia Wilde will receive the “Wilde Artist of the Year” honor for 2019. She will be lauded at the group’s annual toast of its winners, this year on February 2nd.

The winners will be announced on January 9th 2020. Here is the full list of nominations for film and television.
