‘Dune,’ ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Only Murders in the Building’ top 69th Golden Reel Awards

The 69th Golden Reel Awards were held this Sunday, put on the by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) guild, celebrating sound editing in film, television, video games and student work where Oscar sound nominees Dune and West Side Story were among winners alongside Nightmare Alley, The Underground Railroad, Succession and Only Murders in the Building.

This year’s ceremony was once again held virtually, with MPSE president Mark Lanza thanking members of the organization for their continued work over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These past two years, our members led the way in developing remote solutions that kept them working,” Lanza said at the ceremony. “We salute their ingenuity. MPSE has always stood for creativity and innovation.”

Dune, West Side Story and Nightmare Alley won the feature film’s main live action categories, with Raya and the Last Dragon taking animated, The Rescue recognized in documentary and Cliff Walkers awarded for sound editing of a foreign language feature.

In television, The Underground Railroad, Succession and Only Murders in the Building were winners with Arcane and Love & Robots representing in animation.

Special awards were given to Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind director Ron Howard, who was given the annual filmmaker award, presented by Supervising Sound Editor Danny Pagan, and the career achievement award was presented to Anthony J. Ciccolini III by Rickley W. Dumm.
