A French tale of rape revenge, traversing the toxic masculinity as a gay, African-American boy to man and Christain missionaries in 17th century feudal Japan dominated the 14th International Cinephile Society’s 2017 nominations today. I am a voting member of the ICS.

Elle, Moonlight, and Silence all earned eight nominations including Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay. All three films also earned acting nominations as well; Isabelle Huppert (Elle) for Best Actress, Andrew Garfield and Issei Ogata (Silence) for Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively and Mahershala Ali and André Holland both earned Supporting Actor nominations for Moonlight.

Right behind, with seven and six nominations, were Pedro Almódovar’s Julieta and Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann. Both films also landed in Picture and Director with acting nominations to boot. Apichatpong Weerasethakul joined the above group in Director for Cemetery of Splendor, which also was nominated for Picture.

Never one to be accused of falling in line with Oscar nominations (14-time Oscar nominee La La Land earned just a single mention here) or even the majority of critics, today saw nominations for Tom Bennet in Love & Friendship, Score nominations for The Neon Demon and The Red Turtle, Embrace of the Serpent as well as tremendous Asian representation for films like The Handmaiden, Mountains May Depart and Right Now, Wrong Then.

Best Actress is a truly international category with a rich tapestry of representation from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia in the form of Natalie Portman (Jackie), Sonia Braga (Aquarius), Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), and Zhao Tao (Mountains May Depart).

Winners of the 14th ICS Awards will be announced on February 19, 2017.
