‘Elvis,’ The Batman,’ Bardo’ earn American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) nominations

Bardo (False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths), The Batman, Elvis, Empire of Light and Top Gun: Maverick are the films nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers in the feature film category, announced today.

Notable misses here included missing were Janusz Kaminski for The Fabelmans (although the guild has been cold on him as of late), Russell Carpenter for Avatar: The Way of Water, Larkin Seiple for Oscar frontrunner Everything Everywhere All At Once, Linus Sandgren for Babylon and Camerimage winner Florian Hoffmeister for TÁR.

Elvis cinematographer Mandy Walker was nominated in the theatrical film category, becoming the third woman ever nominated by the guild, after Rachel Morrison for 2018’s Mudbound and Ari Wegner for 2021’s The Power of the Dog. Both Morrison and Wegner turned their ASC noms into Oscar nominations, the first two women ever nominated by the Academy.

Last year, the ASC and Oscar matched up 4/5 where Belfast was subbed out for West Side Story. The ASC winner has gone on to win the Oscar for cinematography for the last three years in a row.

On the television side, the nominees included double nods for Atlanta, House of the Dragon, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Viola Davis will receive the ASC Board of Governors Award. The 37th annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards Gala will be held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., on March 5 and live-streamed worldwide.
