Emmy Predictions: Comedy Series categories (June)

Huzzah! Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning are coming for Emmy crowns in THE GREAT (Courtesy of Hulu)

Now that all eligible shows for the 2019/2020 Emmy season have been seen, and even with the slightly extended eligibility window, we now have a clearer idea of what’s good, what’s not and what might get in anyway.

Emmys: Television Academy pushes submission and voting dates back

Very little (if any) change at the top of most lists, with Schitt’s Creek (PopTV) and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon) going head to head in virtually every category. Netflix’s Space Force may have bested the president in the trademark department but was met with brutal reviews (it’s at 39% on Rotten Tomatoes). With the streamer’s Dead to Me right there and playing strong, the former may see very little come Emmy nomination morning.

Moving up the charts or popping up for the first time is Hulu’s The Great, with stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult joining the show in the fray of contention. FX’s massive hit Dave and its creator and star Dave Burd also debut. Also from FX, Emmy winner Martin Freeman shows up with Breeders.

Emmys: Television Academy cancels Governors Balls, Creative Arts awards to go virtual

Guest acting, writing and directing category predictions will be featured in the next predictions, once the official submission ballots appear.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
