Emmys: Official Episode Submissions for the 2017 Emmy Awards

The nominations are in, now comes the time where performers and studios decide what episodes to submit to ensure the best chance at winning Emmy gold in September. For Series, shows submit six episodes. For individuals, a single episode that best encapsulates their character and performance. Things are a little different in Limited Series/TV Movie. A Lead performer submits the entire series, a Supporting performer a single episode. If a performer is nominated for a TV Movie (like Robert De Niro or Michelle Pfeiffer in The Wizard of Lies) no submission is necessary.

This is one of the most fun parts about the Emmy awards. Every year is another year of ‘Do tapes matter?’ Tapes being the submissions as they were, back in the day, video cassette tapes. The phrasing stuck and even though no ‘tapes’ are used anymore it’s still what we call it. Sometimes you have a “Whitecaps” episode (one of Edie Falco’s locked wins for The Sopranos that we all knew was happening even before HBO submitted it for her) that is simply undeniable. Sometimes a submission will seem so obvious but then a performer (or their network) makes a drastic and damaging choice that loses them the Emmy (I’m looking at you, Robin Wright). Then sometimes a killer tape (like Viola Davis’s stillborn baby episode last year) seems like a slam dunk and then Tatiana Maslany swoops in, a year after the highest buzz for her and Orphan Black, and wins. Timing can play a crucial role in who wins Emmys just as much as a good submission.

Upcoming podcasts will talk about what we think people will and should submit and then based on those submissions winner predictions will take shape. Keep an eye out for first winner predictions this week.

These will be updated as soon as they are revealed (scroll down to the Guest categories for first official submissions).
