Ahead of its season finale on May 10, AwardsWatch has an exclusive clip from the five-part documentary series Algiers, America: The Relentless Pursuit from Andscape, Words+Pictures and Fager Films and streaming on Hulu.

The series follows the high school football team at Edna Karr in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, one of the roughest neighborhoods in the city. The predominantly Black team and coaching staff are among the nation’s best and every year at least a dozen seniors from the school receive full scholarships to play football at division one colleges. And then there is the most important distinction: almost all the players have lost teammates, friends, and family to gun violence or prison.

To Coach Brice Brown, whose father was murdered on the streets of Algiers, winning is not the most crucial part of his job. His priority is keeping his players alive until they graduate – filling in as the father many players are missing, instilling a team spirit, and guiding them through their lives in a dangerous and fragile environment. The program not only produces top athletes, it is saving kid’s lives from the gun violence that tears through their community.

In this exclusive clip of the season finale, titled “Forever 48,” Jawin Newman, the team’s top running back who plays with a bullet lodged in his leg, rests up with his family in a hotel after Hurricane Ida forced them to evacuate from their home. Jawin dreams of being a rap star while his mother Tomica feels he’s come so far as a football player that he needs to stay in school and see it through.

The series is produced by Kristen Lappas and Raza Naqvi, executive produced by Raina Kelley, Jackson Fager, Jeff Fager, Connor Schell, and Libby Geist and co-executive produced by Marquis Daisy, Joe Langford, and Durado Brooks, Jr.

Here is the clip below. Episode five of Algiers, America: The Relentless Pursuit airs Wednesday, May 10 on Hulu.

Algiers, America: The Relentless Pursuit is Emmy eligible for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
