Fine Young Cannibals: 8 burning questions after that killer ‘Yellowjackets’ finale

Shauna (Melane Lynskey), Taissa (Tawny Cypress), Natalie (Juliette Lewis) and Misty (Christina Ricci) clean up after cleaning up to hit their 25th high school reunion in Showtime’s Yellowjackets

The time has come: Showtime’s much buzzed about show, Yellowjackets, has successfully finished its first season. The first season has benefitted since its premiere from word-of-mouth and a devout Twitter following (Yellowjackets hive, I’m looking at you). Every week has raised questions for the audience, the answers slowly unraveling over the course of the season. Being released weekly provided the show time to grow an audience and allow viewers to create theories as more and more questions were being raised. While viewers surely went into the finale expecting answers, they’re given even more questions to ponder while we wait for season two.

Major spoilers for the Yellowjackets finale below.

1. Where is Javi?

The last time we saw Javi was in the penultimate episode of the season when everyone is tripping on shrooms. While the girls are running after Travis, Javi calls out to Shauna from a bush – when she notices him, all she says is “run.” Javi does what she says, but where did he run? We see Travis looking for him in the finale to no avail. Where could he have gone? And is he alive in present day?

2. Who withdrew the money from Travis’s account?

Natalie has been trying to figure out who withdrew the money from Travis’s account, only being told that only a family member can access this kind of information. This brings up another question: if only family members can access the bank account, does that mean that Javi could still be alive in present day? That he could have withdrawn it?

3. What are Misty’s plans?

The last thing we see from adult Misty in the finale is allowing Jessica to go free (finally!) after being kept in her basement for several episodes. Before Jessica goes to leave, she notices that Misty has gotten rid of her cigarettes; when she asks for them back, Misty pulls them out of the trash and hands them to her. Misty watches as Jessica gets in her car and lights a cigarette. Jessica is driving when she starts to have blurred vision and feeling woozy before parking her car halfway onto the curb – we’re then shown a flashback to Misty sticking a needle and injecting something into the filter of the cigarettes. What did she do to Jessica? What will she do next? What all does she know? And where was Caligula this episode?

4. Is there a cult in the wilderness?

Since the plane crash, we’ve seen a symbol on trees that were there before the plane crashed. We see the symbol multiple times over the course of the season, most notably in the present-day underneath Travis’s dead body. What could it mean? Is this cult still going? Is that where Javi went?

5. Will Simone confront Taissa?

In the finale, we learn the results of the state senate race that Taissa has been using most of her time to run. Taissa wins, which seems to surprise her a little. While she’s with her team learning the results of the race, her wife Simone (who isn’t living at home currently) goes to their house to pick up some things for herself and Sammy. While Simone is looking, she spots blood – she follows the blood to what seems to be a place where a ritual happened, involving their dog’s head and heart! What makes this even more ominous is that the mysterious symbol that has popped up everywhere is written in blood on the wall. Taissa clearly did this to win the election, but will Simone confront her next season? I sure hope so.

6. Is there something supernatural going on?

We keep getting hints that something extra might be happening. Lottie surely believes there is. While we see what Taissa does to win the election, this clearly started when they were in the wilderness. Lottie is seen depositing a heart (the bear’s, presumably) into a hollow tree trunk at the end of the episode, but what for? What’s actually going on?

7. Who the hell took Natalie?

In the present day, Natalie is struggling. Towards the end of the episode, we see her with a gun being held underneath her chin as she contemplates suicide. Out of nowhere, the door bursts open as a group of men come in (with necklaces that have the symbol on them!) and take Natalie, pushing her into a van and taking off. While this happens, Natalie is being left a voicemail from Suzie, telling her she’s dug into who took the money from Travis’s bank account and thinking she’s being followed. She ends her voicemail by asking “Who the fuck is Lottie Matthews?” So not only is Lottie alive, but she could also oversee this cult. The Antler Queen lives.

8. Who was being hunted in the first episode?

The first episode opens with a girl running. Based on the noises heard (that are similar to the noises the girls make when they’re running after Travis in episode nine), she’s presumably being chased before she falls into a pit and dies. Across the course of the episode, she’s seen being hung up and bled out, then seemingly eaten by the girls. Who was this? All we know for sure is that it isn’t Misty (based on the hair) and she’s wearing the gold necklace. Will next season show us who she is?
