First look at the full cast of James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

“It’s going to be different than any superhero movie ever made.”

Pandemic be damned, we got our first look at James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, both in a roll call of the cast and characters as well as a behind the scenes look courtesy of the  DC FanDome virtual convention on Saturday.

Several actors are back from the 2016 Suicide Squad film, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Among those not returning are Jared Leto’s Joker and Will Smith’s Deadshot. “This is a gritty, 1970s war movie combined with James Gunn’s brilliant characters and comedy” producer Peter Safran said.

“I was excited for the opportunity to be able to do The Suicide Squad in the way it could be done from my point of view,” said Gunn in the BTS look.

New this time, Gunn goes deep into the DC Comics library for some lesser known characters as well as few new ones created specifically for the film.

Idris Elba: Bloodsport – a mercenary driven to vengeance in the comics after his brother loses all his limbs in the Vietnam War, hence the Vietnam War reference from Safran.

Pete Davidson: Blackguard – a not-terribly-successful or smart villain who is easily manipulated into foiling his own schemes.

Nathan Fillion: T.D.K. (new character) – possibly connected to Suicide Squad character Knockout, a female villain with super strength.

Alice Braga: Sul Soria (new character) – seemingly related to the comics character Juan Soria, who joins the Suicide Squad after getting rejected by the Justice League.

Michael Rooker: Savant – the long-locked, white-haired villain who runs afoul of the Birds of Prey in his efforts to discover Batman’s true identity.

John Cena: Peacemaker – kind of like Homelander of Amazon’s The Boys, Cena describes his character as a “douchey Captain America,” and Gunn elaborates, saying he’s “the guy who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill along the way.”

David Dastmalchian: Polka-Dot Man – a Batman villain from the 1960s who could use the dots on his suit for his evildoing, although it’s unclear how or what power they possess.

Sean Gunn: Weasel – a man-sized weasel. An adult Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy type.

Peter Capaldi: The Thinker – one of the oldest DC Comics villains going all the way back to the 1940s, whose powers include the ability to control human and electronic minds alike.

Flula Borg: Javelin – a former Olympic athlete who first matched up with Green Lantern before joining the Suicide Squad.

Daniela Melchior: Ratcatcher 2 – a rat-controlling Batman villain, presumably related to the original Ratcatcher.

Mayling Ng: Mongal – an alien with a twin brother named Mongul, who eventually goes head to head with Superman.

Steve Agee: King Shark – a giant man with a shark head who was recently featured on the CW TV series The Flash and a completely animated character.
