First Look: Teaser Trailer for ‘CAROL’ starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara

The highly anticipated teaser from Studiocanal UK for Todd Haynes’ Carol, starring two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett and Cannes Best Actress winner (for this film) Rooney Mara is here and it’s full of furtive glances, laughing, crying, hands on shoulders and a gorgeous sense of love and longing. Set to Margaret Whiting’s “Foolish Heart,” the trailer is evocative and exciting and will basically leave you like this after watching it:

As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light. Carol is directed by Todd Haynes and written by Phyllis Nagy with moving performances from Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Cory Michael Smith.[/box]

It definitely looks and feels like an Oscar film. There are classic melodrama elements that are a Haynes speciality but that also fit into a classic Oscar style. It just happens to have an LGBT slant to it that elevates it from the traditional 1950s versions of a story like this. But, as one of our community members wonderfully stated this morning, “Oscar season lasts for a couple months, but a great film lasts forever.”

The Weinstein Company will release Carol on November 20th after festival appearances at BFI, New York and likely Telluride.
