The National Board of Review (NBR), the oldest film awards organization in the US, will be the first to hand out prizes for films of 2018. They have set November 27th for their announcement.

The group, founded in 1909, hands out awards Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, Best Original and Adapted Screenplay, Breakthrough Performance and Directorial Debut as well as signature honors such as Freedom of Expression and Spotlight Award. They also have multiple lists including Top 10 Films (outside of their Best Film choice), Top 10 Independent Films, Top 5 Foreign Films and Top 5 Documentaries.

2018/2019 Film Awards Calendar

Last year, the NBR went in deep on The Post giving it Best Film, Actor (Tom Hanks) and Actress (Meryl Streep). Greta Gerwig won Best Director for Lady Bird, Supporting Actor went to Willem Dafoe for The Florida Project and Supporting Actress went to Laurie Metcalf for Lady Bird. Timothée Chalamet won Breakthrough for Call Me By Your Name. All but Hanks went on to earn Oscar nominations.

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
