If Beale Street Could Talk, Madeline’s Madeline, Eighth Grade, Support the Girls, Hereditary among other top nomination getters
The nominations for the 2018 Gotham Independent Film Awards were announced today with Paul Schrader’s First Reformed and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite grabbing the most mentions, with three apiece. Both were nominated for Best Feature alongside Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, Joseph Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline and Chloe Zhao’s The Rider.
Best Actor was a melange of lead and supporting performances (the Gothams don’t have a supporting category) with BlacKkKlansman‘s Adam Driver and Richard E. Grant from Can You Ever Forgive Me? going up against Lakeith Stanfield in Sorry to Bother You, Ethan Hawke in First Reformed and Ben Foster in Leave No Trace.
The best actress nominating committee also voted to give a special jury award to the three main actresses in The Favourite — Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz — for their ensemble performance.
As was previously announced, Weisz will receive the Actress tribute at this year’s Gotham Awards, alongside fellow tribute recipients Willem Dafoe (Actor), Paul Greengrass (Director) and Jon Kamen (Industry).
On the TV side, the Gotham Awards, which three years ago started recognizing television, nominated Alias Grace, Big Mouth, The End of the F***ing World, Killing Eve, Pose and Sharp Objects for its Breakthrough Series – Long Form award.
The Gotham Award nominees are selected by committees of film critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in making films will determine the final award recipients.
IFP members will determine the Gotham Audience Award with nominees comprising the 15 nominated films in the Best Feature, Best Documentary and Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director award categories. Voting will take place online from November 19-24.
Last year, Call Me By Your Name and Get Out were the big winners with Moonlight earning top honors the previous year. All went on to win Oscars in Adapted and Original Screenplay with Moonlight also winning Best Picture.
The 2018 Gotham Awards will take place on Monday, November 26 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
