The nominees for the 15th Cinema Eye Honors, which celebrate outstanding artistry and craft in nonfiction filmmaking were announced today.
Flee led all films at the Cinema Eye Honors nominations with seven nods, with Summer of Soul right behind with six. Jessica Kingdon’s Ascension, Jessica Beshir’s Faya Dayi and E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s The Rescue followed with five noms apiece, and Todd Haynes’ Apple pic The Velvet Underground claiming four. All are also eligible for the audience prize. That list makes the up the nominees for Outstanding Nonfiction Feature.
The org introduced a new category this year, for Outstanding Sound Design, and those nominees included All Light, Everywhere, Faya Dayi, Flee, Summer of Soul and The Velvet Underground.
Previous Cinema Eye winners up for awards in 2022 include Chin, Vasarhelyi, Joslyn Barnes, R.J. Cutler, Liz Garbus, Matthew Heineman, Johanna Hogg, Steve James, Laura Poitras, Signe Byrge Sorensen, David Tedeschi and Nanfu Wang. 65% of this year’s nominations went to first-time filmmakers and craftspeople. Women comprise 48% of directing nominees, with women of color comprising 57%, the latter being a record for Cinema Eye.
The Cinema Eye Honors award ceremony will take place at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria on January 13, 2022.
