From Emmy snubbed to Golden Globe-d, here’s who could get an awards do-over

The Golden Globes are not as mysterious as they’d like to appear to be when it comes to the television nominees and winners— it’s simple they like new shows. The Hollywood Foreign Press loves to award the hot new show and be the first to do it. But with COVID-19 having all but shut the industry down there are few new shows available to reward. Which begs the question now what?

It actually allows the Globes to do something they also love to do — correct the Emmys mistakes. Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City), Amy Poehler (Park and Recreation), Chloë Sevigny (Big Love) and Matt Bomer (The Normal Heart) all either lost at the Emmys or were snubbed entirely but would be recognized with wins from the HFPA. 

Let’s take a look at the performers and shows most likely to bounce back with a Golden Globe nomination.

Tom Pelphrey (Ozark)

Pelphrey was the breakout star of season three of Ozark. Many believed he was a lock for an Emmy nomination but ended up shockingly snubbed. The Globes could see this as an opportunity to nominate Pelphrey. However,  to date only Jason Bateman has received a Best Drama TV Actor nomination (2018-2019). But Pelphrey, seems destined for bigger things and could sneak into the always unpredictable Best TV Supporting Actor race, especially with the extra attention of co-starring in the Netflix film Mank. 

Rhea Seahorn (Better Call Saul)

Seahorn has been a critics’ darling for the entirety of Saul’s run. But she’s just been unlucky (or unpopular) when it comes to the Emmys. With COVID-19 still running rampant this gives the Globes a delicious chance to one up the Emmys by nominating the criminally ignored Seahorn and getting a lot of praise from the industry and press. They may get so much praise for being the first televised awards to do so that they’re tempted into giving her the award!

Nicholas Hoult (The Great)

Hoult, has been on the Golden Globes radar for years with films: About a Boy, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Favourite. Hoult was overlooked at the Emmys. But the HFPA may see his comedic turn on televisions The only potential problem is he will compete in the always unpredictable Best TV Supporting Actor race and they typically do not like comedic performances. The Great as Emperor Peter of Russia as the perfect opportunity to award him.  Which brings us to….

The Great

The Great, received two Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Writing and Directing but was left out of the series and races. A period one-hour comedy may be the Globes cup of tea. Look out for not only Hoult (listed above) but series star Elle Fanning who plays Catherine the Great to make her presence known with a nomination also. 

The cast of What We Do in the Shadows

The Emmys surprised us all by nominating the comedic vampire show What We Do in the Shadows. The Globes may one-up the Emmys by nominating not only the show but one or more of their very talented ensemble. Matt Berry who plays Lazlo and Kayvan Novak who plays Nandor will try and crack the race for Best TV Comedy Actor. But look out for the Natasia Demetriou who plays the temptress Nadja (and happens to be the only woman in the cast) to surprise with a Best TV Comedy Actress nomination.

Claire Danes (Homeland)

Danes won two Globes and two Emmys for (2012-2013) for her role as Carrie Mathison but she was snubbed for her final season of Homeland at the Emmys. The Globes may be kinder and give her a goodbye nomination.

A Golden Globe oversight that could be corrected: Uzo Aduba (Mrs. America)

Uzo Aduba and her breakthrough performance as Crazy Eyes on Orange is the New Black won her two Emmys (2014-2015) and two individual SAG Awards (2015-2016). The Globes did nominate her twice (2015-2016) but they remain the only major television award missing from her trophy case. Now in competition for her Emmy-winning performance as Shirley Chisholm in Mrs. America, this could be the Hollywood Foreign Press’ opportunity to right their wrong.
