Frontrunner Friday Oscar Predictions: Lady Sings the Blues

As the tallying of votes of this week’s Presidential election rages on (and as of this writing, Joe Biden is the leader and will be our next president) it almost seems silly to do anything else but keep glued to the television but we press on!

Interestingly, as Georgia turned blue early this morning so did Pennsylvania, led by the state’s largest city, Philadelphia. The city that gave birth to freedom was also the birthplace of Billie Holiday and just this week Paramount Pictures, via Vanity Fair, released the first set of images from the upcoming film The United States vs Billie Holiday with Andra Day in the titular role. With Jennifer Hudson’s Aretha Franklin biopic Respect abruptly yanked off this season’s calendar (it will reappear in August 2021), Day, in what could be a star-making turn, now has a much better chance at earning a Best Actress nomination as long as the film holds onto its mid-February release date.

Some major category placements came in this week as Amazon announced it would be splitting the campaigns for the men of Regina King’s One Night in Miami. Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Malcolm X and Eli Goree’s Cassius Clay/Muhammed Ali will go lead while Leslie Odom Jr’s Sam Cooke and Aldis Hodge’s Jim Brown will compete in supporting. While it will be a tougher path for Ben-Adir, Odom Jr. now has a much clearer one in a very open and fluid category.

Sony Pictures Classics also confirmed that Academy Award winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) will compete in supporting actress for The Father and thereby finds herself head to head once again with 7-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close (in Hillbilly Elegy). But they’ll both battle Amanda Seyfried in Mank, who is assured a nomination and will be stiff competition for both.

Here are my Frontrunner Friday Oscar predictions for November 6, 2020. For monthly predictions, click on each category title.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
