As we enter the final leg of the 2022/2023 awards race, with DGA and BAFTA this weekend and PGA and SAG the next, teetering on the precipice of accolades that will either solidify or deviate from any of our predictions, it’s always good to be reminded that these races are often very fluid. For every frontrunner that runs the board all the way to the end there’s someone who feels locked but ultimately can’t seal the deal by Oscars night.
Since last week’s predictions we had the Makeup & Hair Stylists guild awards, which gave its period hair and period makeup wins to Elvis, and its special makeup effects (prosthetic) to The Whale. Both are going to be very competitive for that Oscar win where recent MUAHs winners Cruella, like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Vice and Bombshell have succeeded.
The Society of Composers and Lyricists also had their say, where Original Score Oscar nominee Everything Everywhere All At Once and Original Song Oscar nominee “Applause” from Diane Warren triumphed. Only in their fourth year, the SCL isn’t a huge precursor but they are a piece of the score/song puzzle that has built quite a few awards bodies leading up to the Oscars. As it stands, of the four song precursors we have – Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, Hollywood Music and Media Awards and the Society of Composers and Lyricists – they’re split in half with “Naatu Naatu” from RRR taking the first two, and “Applause” from Tell it Like a Woman bringing in wins from the latter two.
Here are my Frontrunner Friday Oscar predictions for the 95th Academy Awards for Friday, February 17, 2023.
