‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ top 70th Primetime Emmy Awards

Game of Thrones managed another Drama Series win after losing both writing and directing for a total of 10 wins including its haul from last week’s Creative Arts Emmys.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel made a near sweep of the comedy awards, taking home Lead Actress for Rachel Brosnahan, Supporting Actress for Alex Borstein, writing and directing for show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Outstanding Comedy Series. Sherman-Palladino, in her traditional top hat, made her way to the stage for her writing win proclaimed, “Whoever put that carpet down, hates women! Time’s Up!” 

Godless and The Assassination of Gianni Versace found multiple wins, including Outstanding Limited Series for later. Creator Ryan Murphy dedicated the show’s win to the LGBTQ community and used the moment to ask for stricter hate crime laws in the US. 

Peter Dinklage won his third Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for Game of Thrones and Westworld‘s Thandie Newton earned her first Emmy for Westworld, beating out three actresses from The Handmaid’s Tale in the process. 

Drama’s top acting awards went to performers on their last chances. Matthew Rhys won Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Americans, which ended its run this spring. Claire Foy won Lead Actress in a Drama Series and exits The Crown as she will be replaced by Olivia Colman, playing an older version of Queen Elizabeth for the next two seasons.

RuPaul’s Drag Race made Emmy history by being the first time the winner of Reality Host and Reality-Competition Program have matched up. RuPaul Charles won his third Emmy last week at the Creative Arts Emmys. 

The show’s highlight though was Glenn Weiss. After winning the Emmy for directing The Oscars (his 14th overall), he told the crowd of its bittersweet nature as his mother had passed away just two weeks prior. Then, in a wild plot twist, he took that moment to propose to his girlfriend Jan Svendsen. “You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend?” Weiss asked, causing the entire audience to gasp. “Because I want to call you my wife.” Even before he could ask, Svendsen made her way to the stage.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held live in Los Angeles at 5pm PT / 8pm ET with hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che of Saturday Night Live.
