Glenn Close is the woman behind the man in first trailer for ‘The Wife’

Behind every great man is a great woman, the saying goes. Six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close sets to define that starring in The Wife as a woman named Joan Castleman who has spent a lifetime sacrificing her own talent and career to bolster her husband’s. When Joe Castleman (played by Jonathan Pryce) is rewarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature, the story unfolds as a journalist (Christian Slater) starts to uncover that Joe’s writing may not have been his own. In flashback (with Close’s own daughter Annie Starke playing the younger Joan) we see the marriage from its beginnings with Joan underwriting many of Joe’s creations that skyrocketed his literary career. This sets the stage for Joan’s truth to be revealed on the greatest stage possible.
There is a tremendous timeliness to this story, showing the commonality of overlooked women and where women have defined themselves by the men they’re married to.
The film is directed by Björn Runge from a screenplay by Jane Anderson adapted from the 2003 novel by Meg Wolitzer and co-stars Max Irons, Elizabeth McGovern, Harry Lloyd and Alix Wilton Regan.
After its Toronto International Film Festival debut last year, Sony Pictures Classics is set to release The Wife on August 3. Here is the first trailer and poster.
