Golden Globe Nominations: The Shape of Water Charms, All the Money in the World Surprises with 3 Noms

Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy The Shape of Water romanced the Hollywood Foreign Press today, earning a field-best seven Golden Globe nominations from the group, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director and Best Actress – Drama for Sally Hawkins. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was right behind with six, making it a very good morning for Fox Searchlight (which distributed both films) and a smart choice by the studio to submit the film in Drama. Steven Spielberg’s The Post also earned six nominations, all in top categories.

Get Out and Call Me By Your Name underperformed a bit today. While both earned Motion Picture and Actor nominations, each were snubbed in Director and Screenplay. Lady Bird’s Greta Gerwig was also snubbed in Director while her film earned nominations in Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Actress, Supporting Actress and Screenplay so apparently the film directed itself.

But the big story of the day, and something many of us were wondering how it would play out, was the big presence of All the Money in the World. While some speculated that Christopher Plummer, who replaced Kevin Spacey in the film after it was finished and ready for release, might sneak into Supporting Actor. He did, but so did Michelle Williams in Best Actress – Drama over seemingly more formidable competition like Annette Bening, Salma Hayek and Vicky Krieps and Ridley Scott in Best Director over Peele and Gerwig, but also Call Me By Your Name‘s Luca Guadagnino. Will this just be a Globes thing or are we seeing the turnaround for a film’s awards prospects like we’ve almost never seen before? If Plummer somehow miraculously makes it into SAG, then yes.

Kristen Bell, Garrett Hedlund, Sharon Stone and Alfre Woodard announced the nominations this morning from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, the site of the 75th Golden Globes ceremony. They were joined by Golden Globe ambassador Simone Garcia Johnson, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president, Meher Tatna, and executive vice president of television at Dick Clark Productions Barry Adelman.

The show will air live at 8pm ET/5pm PT on Sunday, January 7, on NBC from the Beverly Hilton with Seth Meyers hosting.
