The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today that it will present its inaugural Gotham TV Awards at a ceremony on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 in New York City, recognizing outstanding television series and performances as well as celebrating icons of the industry.

Gotham TV Awards submissions will open April 15, 2024 and close April 29, 2024. Nominations will be announced on May 16, 2024, with winners announced and presented on stage on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 in New York City.

For the past decade, the 33-year old Gotham Awards has honored excellence in television in three Gotham Awards categories – Breakthrough Series (Over 40 minutes), Breakthrough Series (Under 40 minutes), and Outstanding Performance in a New Series – and celebrated a diverse array of TV creators with Gotham Tributes, including tributes to creators such as Steve McQueen, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Murphy. Additionally, The Gotham Film & Media Institute has supported numerous emerging TV creators through its year-round programming. Moving forward, all television awards will be given out at the Gotham TV Awards.

“We are proud of our legacy in recognizing the creative community in film and TV, and we have come to recognize that our TV awards could have even greater impact. We sense a unique opportunity to widen our reach by expanding our competitive categories and tributes in a show focused solely on creators of episodic TV, limited series, and non-theatrical streaming movies,” shared The Gotham Executive Director Jeffrey Sharp.

“This expansive view of the creative landscape harkens back to our founding mission in 1979 to celebrate and nurture independent film and media creators. We believe this awards show could be a launching pad to expand our support of TV creators and continue our longstanding tradition of discovering unique voices and elevating original stories,” added The Gotham Deputy Director Kia Brooks.

The Gotham TV Awards nominations will be selected by committees of critics, journalists, programmers, and curators. Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in the making of TV and film will determine the final award recipients.

The inaugural Gotham TV Awards will honor work in the following categories:

Breakthrough Comedy Series

Breakthrough Drama Series

Breakthrough Limited Series

Breakthrough Nonfiction Series

Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series

Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series

Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series

Audience Award

Additional categories are expected to be introduced for recognition by the Gotham TV Awards in 2025.
