The Greater Western New York Film Critics Association (GWNYFCA) announced their nominations today with more than a few surprises.
Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog led with seven mentions but curiously, the current critics’ awards frontrunner Kodi Smit-McPhee was missing. One reason for that might be that the group opted to not follow the Oscar eligibility (and most critics) from last season and nominated Judas and the Black Messiah for Best Picture, Original Screenplay and Supporting Actor for Daniel Kaluuya, who won the Oscar back in April.
Spencer earned the next highest nomination total with six, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Kristen Stewart. The trio of Licorice Pizza, The Last Duel and Dune tied with five nominations apiece, including Best Picture and Best Director nods. TLD‘s Jodie Comer also earned a Best Actress nod.
Breakthrough performance nominations included Mike Faist (West Side Story, also a supporting actor nominee), Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza), Emilia Jones (CODA), Agathe Rousselle (Titane) and Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby).
Winners will be announced on December 31. Here is the full list of nominations.
